  • Georgia is a 4.5-point favorite against Florida in a huge matchup in the SEC East
  • The Bulldogs have won three straight in this series
  • Read below for a deeper look at this massive SEC East rivalry

This season has felt different than many seasons, but college football has still provided us with plenty of huge games in 2020. The matchup between Florida and Georgia this week is the perfect example of that. The world’s largest outdoor cocktail party may be happening a week later than it would in a standard year, but as it has for several seasons, the matchup between the Gators and Bulldogs has SEC Championship implications written all over it.

The Bulldogs have won three straight games in this series, and they’re the favored to make it a fourth in a row on Saturday.

Bulldogs Bounce Back

It was a bittersweet Halloween for the Bulldogs. On the bright side, they got back into the win column with a 14-3 victory over Kentucky. It was an especially impressive day for defensive back Richard LeCounte, who had a career-high 13 tackles and had a huge fumble recovery to help seal the game for Georgia.

Unfortunately, the team will now be without the defensive captain for “at least a few weeks”, per an ESPN report. According to the report, LeCounte was involved in a traffic accident on Saturday night in which he suffered “a shoulder injury and several cuts and bruises”. The injuries won’t require surgery, but they will still keep him off the field for a significant period of time.

This is a huge loss for Georgia, and the result against Kentucky only highlighted that. With a quarterback in Stetson Bennett who is completing under 60 percent of his passes and has nearly as many interceptions as touchdowns, this team has to win games with defense. The loss of LeCounte, hours after he captained the defense to a dominant victory, is brutal timing for the Bulldogs.

Gators Dominate Mizzou

After a loss to Texas A&M, huge numbers of Covid positive tests, and a postponement of the LSU matchup, Florida has finally gotten back into the swing of things. It didn’t take long either.

The Gators entered halftime with a 20-7 lead, and the only fight Missouri put up was in the brawl that occurred as the teams headed for their locker rooms. The final score was 41-17 in favor of Florida, and the Gators were dominant in every facet, out gaining Missouri by 266 yards on the day.

Kyle Trask was again impressive this week, posting 345 yards and four touchdowns. He’s already thrown 18 touchdowns in 2020 after a 2019 season in which he had 25 all year. Couple that with the low total of just two picks this year, and Trask is building a strong case for a trip to New York for the Heisman Trophy presentation.

Where Will the Line Move?

Georgia’s trademark unit is its defense, and the Bulldogs just lost the leader and key playmaker of that group. Florida’s trademark unit is its offense, and that group is firing on all cylinders. If a side is going to get hammered by the public, it will be that of the Gators.

The lingering question is the status of Bulldog quarterback JT Daniels. He’s yet to play in 2020, but he has been cleared. The reaction to this offense’s 14-point performance against Kentucky, coupled with the magnitude of the Florida matchup, could be a reason for Kirby Smart to finally give Daniels the reigns of the offense. If that news were to drop during the week, it’s likely that the money will be a bit more even.
