Sonego vs Evans Odds & Preview: Vienna Open Semifinals

  • The second semifinal of the Vienna Open will take place Saturday at 10:20 AM EST
  • 42nd ranked Lorenzo Sonego defeated Novak Djokovic to earn his spot in the semis
  • See below for a preview of the match and our best bet

The semifinals for the men’s singles at the Vienna Open get underway Saturday morning at 10:20 am EST. An unexpected pair will be competing in the second match of the day as both unseeded Songeo and Daniel Evans provided huge upsets in their quarterfinal matches to earn their spot here. Neither player was the favorite in their quarterfinal matches.

Sonego vs Evans Odds

Player Spread Moneyline Total
Lorenzo Sonego +2.5 (-118) +138 O 22.5 (-113)
Daniel Evans -2.5 (-105) -175 U 22.5 (-113)

Odds taken Oct. 30 from DraftKings.

Sonego’s Biggest Win

Deemed the ‘lucky loser,’ Sonego is coming off the biggest win of his career in the quarters. Sonego defeated Djokovic in a dominating straight set win, winning 6-2, 6-1 to reach his first semifinal of the season, in just 68 minutes.

Sonego wasn’t even supposed to be here. The 25-year old entered the main draw replacing Diego Schwartzman, despite losing in the final round of the qualifiers just five days ago. Since replacing Schwartzman, Sonego has yet to lose a set. Hence his now nickname, ‘the lucky loser.’

Despite Djokovic earning six breakpoints in that second set, throughout the entire match he was making an unusually high number of unforced errors, and not able to shake it. With unforced errors plaguing his opponent, Sonego was able to completely take advantage, winning 80% of his first-serve points, as well as 53% of his return points.

Evans Upsets Dimitrov

Maybe not as big of an upset as Sonego beating Djokovic, but an upset indeed. Grigor Dimitrov was the favorite heading into the match, but Evans was able to record his eighth win of the season against a top-20 player. He beat Dimitrov in three sets, winning 7(7)-6(3), 4-6, 6-3.

The match was pretty even in that first set, with the two players going back and forth with breaks. The match got more interesting in the second set with Dimitrov coming out on top, having recorded the only break in the set. But Evans was able to come out in the third and didn’t allow for Dimitrov to gain any momentum the rest of the match.

Head-to-Head & Best Bet

These two players have never faced each other on tour before, but they do have relatively close ATP rankings with Sonego at 42 and Evans at 33. That leads me to believe that this will be a close match.

Interestingly enough, despite the rather impressive win over Djokovic in the quarterfinals, Sonego isn’t the moneyline favorite heading into this match. I’d argue that the momentum and confidence that Sonego will be bringing into this  semifinal match will be evident, and if he’s able to control it, he will be the one to beat.

Both players have a strong presence on the court, and a good baseline game. I actually think Sonego is the best bet here at +138. The way he was able to take control of the court and match against Djokovic was extremely impressive. And yes, as I mentioned above Djokovic did have an unusual amount of unforced errors, but Sonego still just out played him.

Best Bet: Sonego moneyline (+138)
